Gameplay

All Star Battle R is a one on one arena fighter where every character plays differently, with moves and Stand abilities drawn straight from their manga appearances, from Jotaro's rapid fire punches to Diavolo's time skipping tricks. Matches take place in interactive stages tied to iconic scenes from the story, and the roster's sheer variety, around fifty fighters covering every part of the series through Stone Ocean, is the game's main selling point.

Premise

Rather than telling a connected story, All Star Battle R works as a celebration of the whole JoJo saga, letting players pit Stand and Ripple users from any era against one another regardless of when they actually appeared in the manga. It keeps the arcade mode structure from the original All Star Battle, where each character gets a short set of story flavored fights built around their own part of the series.

Release

All Star Battle R released worldwide on September 1 and 2, 2022, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and Windows, giving the 2013 PlayStation 3 original its first release on modern hardware and its first launch outside Japan. Reviewers were split: many enjoyed the expanded roster and combat variety, but the decision to reuse the original game's outdated netcode instead of adding rollback drew heavy criticism and became the game's defining complaint among online players.
