Gameplay

The core system carries over from the original arcade release: alongside standard attacks and a super meter, each fighter can toggle their Stand on or off, changing their available moves and risk versus reward balance on the fly. Stands have their own gauge and can be worn down or even temporarily broken if they absorb too much punishment. The HD version adds full online multiplayer, a training mode, replay saving, and the option to play in the original low resolution arcade look or with a smoothing filter.

Premise

The underlying game adapts Stardust Crusaders, the third part of the manga, casting Jotaro Kujo and his grandfather Joseph Joestar against the immortal vampire DIO and his circle of Stand using henchmen after DIO curses Jotaro's mother. Roster and stage selection stick closely to that arc's cast, giving each fighter a Stand pulled straight from the source material.

Release

Originally released to arcades in Japan on Capcom's CPS-3 hardware, with console ports following on PlayStation and Dreamcast that same era, the game returned in this HD form on PlayStation Network on August 21, 2012, and Xbox Live Arcade the next day. Reviews were mixed; critics enjoyed the odd cast and attacks but felt the fighting system was too simple next to Capcom's Street Fighter output and that the asking price was steep, and the digital storefronts delisted it in 2014.
