Gameplay

Built in the mold of Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat, the game uses a customizable four-button layout with quarter-circle special commands, throws, forward and back dashes, and desperation moves that trigger at low health. Players can cancel block stun directly into specials, dashes, or desperation attacks, an advanced system for a licensed fighter of its time. Modes include a story mode, tournament bracket, two-player versus, CPU battles, and a practice mode.

Story and Characters

Set during the S anime season, the story has the Sailor Guardians hold a fighting tournament to settle who should lead the group. Playable characters are Sailor Moon, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Venus, Neptune, Uranus, Pluto, and Chibi Moon, each voiced by their original anime actress and given a themed stage such as Hikawa Shrine, Crystal Tokyo, or the Time Door.

Legacy

Angel released the game in Japan on December 16, 1994, with no release abroad, selling around 60,000 copies. Long written off as a middling licensed tie-in, it developed a cult following in the fighting game community for its unbalanced but distinctive mechanics, becoming a recurring side tournament at events such as Evo, where Arc System Works publicly confirmed in 2018 that it had developed the game. A 1996 update, Sailor Moon SuperS: Zenin Sanka!! Shuyaku Sodatsusen, added Sailor Saturn to the roster.
