Gameplay

Fights use five main buttons: light, medium, and heavy attacks, a dodge, and a dedicated Style button. That Style button is what makes each fighter feel distinct, since the roster splits across five Battle Styles, Hamon, Vampirism, Mode, Stand, and Mounted, each governing a different set of special moves and combo tools tied to how that character fights in the source material. Arenas also let fighters use the environment, continuing CyberConnect2's push toward mobile, stage interactive 3D arena combat.

Premise

Story Mode strings together an original narrative inspired by the first eight parts of the manga, letting players relive key fights such as Jonathan against Dio Brando and Joseph Joestar's battles from Battle Tendency, with narration from voice actor Toru Okawa. After clearing a part once, an Another Battle option unlocks that lets the player refight those same battles from the antagonist's side, and the eighth part caps things off with original what if matchups pitting protagonists from every era against each other.

Release

All Star Battle launched in Japan on August 29, 2013, through Bandai Namco, with English language releases following in Europe and Australia on April 25, 2014, and North America on April 29, 2014. The original roster totaled 40 characters plus one guest fighter, Baoh, pulled from an unrelated earlier manga by series creator Hirohiko Araki. It sold strongly, with over 500,000 pre-orders in Japan, and Famitsu awarded it a perfect 40 out of 40 score. A remaster, All Star Battle R, followed in 2022 with an expanded roster on newer platforms.
