Zampano

Ordinarily Zampano is a stocky, bespectacled man in his mid to late thirties. As a human-based chimera, though, he can turn into a hulking gray creature that mixes the look of a hedgehog with that of a razorback boar. Stiff spines then bristle along his back, which he fires like darts, and he moves at surprising speed.

At first Zampano and his fellow chimera come off as brash, cocky muscle serving Kimblee and the army. Edward's kindness reveals a level-headed man who fought only for causes he believed were just, and who abandons the military the moment its lies become clear. Proud of his chimera strength, he still hides deep shame about his changed body and dreads facing his family, until Alphonse's promise of a possible cure renews his hope. He is also a smooth liar, quietly pleased with his talent for masking his real intentions.

Military experimentation turns Zampano into a chimera, and he is paired with Jerso as one of Kimblee's two bodyguards. A run-in with Scar goes wrong when he and the Elrics beat the pair down; Major Miles nearly executes them, but Alphonse wins them over with the prospect of one day recovering their real forms. The party escapes through a disused mine shaft, joined in flight by Yoki, May Chang, Dr. Marcoh, Scar, and Winry. At an Ishvalan camp, Zampano baits Envy into an ambush by leaking their location, and Envy finally falls to a combination of blows, May's far-reaching alkahestry, and the Philosopher's Stone that Marcoh wields, though every fresh volley of spines saps Zampano's stamina.

He and his companions later help rebuild Reole, then march on Central alongside Hohenheim, Fu, Lan Fan, Heinkel, Darius, and Edward, joining Mustang's assault and striking at Father's lair. He looks on while Ed and Father settle their final duel, and turns up one last time in a cafe, planning with Jerso to reclaim his body as the pair prepare to guard Alphonse on the road to Xing.
