Ryunosuke Chiba

Chiba's black hair falls into long bangs that veil his eyes, narrowing his sight much like the sight on a rifle, which the story credits for his uncanny aim. He grew the fringe out to hide a piercing stare that tended to unsettle those around him. On screen his eyes are colored a deep maroon.

Serious, composed, and sparing with words, Chiba carries the air of a grown professional, a comparison he shares with Rinka Hayami, though he speaks even less than she does. For all his quiet, he has a keen eye for the small shifts in the people around him, as when he noticed Karma Akabane sulking over slipped grades and nudged him back into good spirits.

Chiba ranks as the single best shot in Class 3-E, boys and girls alike. His forte is the distant kill, built on careful triangulation and range-finding that keep his rounds on target; compared with Rinka Hayami he is stiffer in his choice of firing positions and weaker against moving marks, but he reaches farther and lands more of his shots overall, skills that drew praise from the veteran hitman Lovro Brovski. His formal debut has him teaming with Hayami to drop specially treated pellets into the drinks of Tomoya Seo and Kaho Tsuchiya.

The island arc gives him room to shine. Paired again with Hayami to fire on a pinned Korosensei, the two miss by half a second and lose their nerve, and when they face the gunman Gastro the doubt lingers. Hayami shoots first and gives away her spot, but Chiba holds back, staying concealed among his classmates so the enemy never fixes his location, and Korosensei's reminder that the class will carry any failure restores enough confidence for them to finish Gastro off. He and Hayami are later thrown out of a shooting gallery for sweeping up every prize. In the paintball civil war he sides with the assassination team, opening by eliminating Meg Kataoka on Karma's order before Yukiko Kanzaki flanks and knocks out both him and his rear guard.

Seven years later Chiba returns with Yuma Isogai and the rest to restore the old classroom, taking on the role of engineer to inspect and catalog the aging structure's soundness. His bond with Hayami, forged through their shared duty as their side's top gunners and matching temperaments, endures past graduation, and she goes on to help him find work and launch his own architecture practice.
