Appearance

In her human guise, Elma is a pale young woman whose eyes are blue and whose silver hair falls long down her back. The clothes she wears after each revival echo those of the ancient Queen of Lebis, and a statue of that ruler stops Ed and Al cold with how closely it mirrors her. While digging through ruins alongside Arlen and her husband, she instead dresses for hard labor. Her monstrous Phantom shape is blue, crowned with long green hair, with fins jutting from the back and dark scales scattered across the skin. One eye glows yellow and the other burns red, and since the mouth stays sealed shut, all feeling reads through her gaze.

Abilities

Elma can dissolve at will and reappear elsewhere. Once she loses herself to the Phantom, what little reason remains lets her call other golems into battle, raise punishing pillars from the ground, and hit hard enough to strip away a large share of Ed's stamina in a single exchange.

History

Elma dies long before the game opens. Her grieving husband tries again and again to bring her back with human transmutation, and when that fails he searches for another route. He joins forces with Arlen Glostner, a young archaeologist, and together they blend old golem-crafting lore with alchemy to pull Elma back into the world. She and Arlen grow close, working side by side to unearth the ruins of Siam-Sid. Roughly six months on, her golem body crumbles to dust before the two men. Jack cannot accept it and builds another, then another; each one rots away in turn, and every return leaves Elma in fresh agony. She even pleads with Arlen to end her, though he never can.

Years later she crosses paths with the Elric brothers in Reole and slips Ed a ring marked with a symbol, a gift Arlen once dug up for her at Siam-Sid, before she fades from sight. Drifting between human and golem, she turns into the deranged Phantom that slays Cornello after his Crimson Stone rebounds on him. Later she is set to watch over the people of Resembool as they are harvested to forge more stones. The Elrics scorch her badly in their clash, and Crowley arrives to mend her with alchemy before carrying her off. Freed at last from her madness in the Tower of Lebis, Elma dies in peace in Arlen's arms. Only he witnesses her spirit return to reclaim the ring Ed had left, then settle beside Crowley's body.
