Sophie Bergmann

Sophie is a fourteen-year-old girl with pale purplish-white hair and washed-out blue eyes, dressed in an outfit resembling Amestrian military style and finished with a black bow-tie. A curious mark shaped like a flower, echoing a transmutation circle, is set into her left hand.

Described as an enigmatic figure, she shares Alphonse Elric's soft spot for stray cats. Much of her nature stays deliberately unexplained across the game, keeping her origins and purpose a mystery for most of the story.

Sophie enters the tale as Edward and Alphonse try to shield her from an attacker named Leoneed, only for her to rescue them instead by unleashing a strange, powerful light that washes over the whole city. She turns out to be the vessel for a witch called Velza, taking that soul into her own body. Her father, Victor, went by the name Gilbert for reasons left unclear and was murdered before her eyes by Zelgiuce of Purgatory. Late in the game she revives Edward after Trigger stabs and kills him in an alley, an act that drops her into a coma so deep that Edward, Alphonse, and Winry all come to believe she has died.
