Appearance

Black Shadow first presents as a squat, stocky figure wrapped in a long robe of blue and white, its eyes reduced to tiny yellow specks and tufts of hair escaping the cloth. Its real shape is monstrous: a colossal wolf carrying two heads, five eyes, and six legs, trailing a long brown tail and spreading a pair of great wings.

Abilities

Fittingly for its name, the demon wields a host of shadow powers. Its darkness can bind a victim so tightly that no mortal is said to escape, and it calls up swarms of shadow ninja to fight in its place. It also fires homing spikes, drives wooden tendrils up through the ground by impaling the earth with its tail, splits into lesser copies or packs of swift wolf-like beasts, teleports, blinds foes through the Bringer-of-Darkness Technique before raising a near-unbreakable crystal barrier. Raw force backs all of this, a single swipe hurling Naruto through the air and cracking fissures into the ground.

History

The demon made its home in a Tree Felling Village cave and had to be kept appeased with sacrifices. Naruto Uzumaki is thought to have destroyed it by unleashing Kurama, the beast sealed within him, after which the body dissolved into a withered trunk, wilting flowers, and a seed from the Tree of Life. A month later the settlement renamed itself the Tree Revival Village.

The flowers of that tree are its one weakness, and though its fate is left unstated, it is presumed slain. Later, finding the cave empty, Guy playfully feigns possession by Black Shadow, an act Naruto sees through at once.
