Captain of the Ghost Ship

The account leaves his features unrecorded, sketching him only through his post at the helm. He stands as the master of the vessel later called the Ghost Ship, an old seaman who has held onto a plain broom ever since his early years.

Those who knew him describe a man who paired real strength with genuine warmth and an open hand. That character shows plainly in his final choice: with a monstrous crab bearing down, he orders the crew's youngest, Hishaku, to run, judging that the boy's youth gives him the best chance to live on.

He and his sailors meet their end at the claws of the Giant Corpse Crab. Before that slaughter, the captain seals Hishaku inside a barrel and passes down the broom he had kept since boyhood, vowing to shield his comrade to the last. Long afterward, in the afterlife, he reappears alongside the fallen crew to greet Hishaku, explaining that none of them can find true rest until the young sailor's own spirit is finally at peace.
