Chino is a kunoichi of the Chinoike clan and the last bearer of the blood-bending Ketsuryugan. Innocent and timid on the surface yet cold and vengeful underneath, she plots to set the hidden villages at one another's throats, until a duel with Sasuke forces her to weigh what her hatred has cost.

Appearance

Chino keeps her light-blonde hair short and spiky at neck length, with a pair of thick strands falling against her rosy cheeks; two small-browed violet eyes flush red whenever the Ketsuryugan awakens. Her frame is tiny for her years, enough that Sasuke first pegs her at around ten and is caught off guard to learn she is actually older than he is, and as a child her hair reached nearly to her waist. Day to day she pairs a sleeveless pink, kimono-style shirt over a high-collared black undershirt, long grey trousers, black fingerless gloves running up to the upper arm, a brown belt with a pouch at the waist, white wrappings covering both legs to the knee, and grey sandals.

Personality

On first meeting, Chino reads as childlike, sweet, and shy, quick to defend Sasuke from a suspicious mob and to apologise for them. The meekness is only a shell. Beneath it lies a manipulative, vengeful nature shaped by a childhood spent as a living weapon and by her belief that the Five Great Nations destroyed her clan. Her aim is to seize village shinobi and turn them loose on each other, killing without hesitation to ease her grudge. The single person she genuinely loves is Nowaki, whom she treats as a brother and would die defending. Her feelings toward Sasuke sour into loathing; she calls him a hypocrite, a man who once meant to raze Konoha yet now blocks her from her own revenge, and she resents that he was always loved even while he shut it out. Only after their fight does she see that she has repeated his old errors, letting emotion ruin the peace she longed for, which leaves her contrite yet touched when he later speaks up for her.

History

Born to En Oyashiro and his wife, their only child, Chino comes from the Chinoike clan of the Valley of Hell. When years of simmering friction there boil over into a massacre, only she and her father live through it. Racked with guilt, Oyashiro conceals that he is her father and tells her instead that he had her whole family slain so she would inherit the sole surviving Ketsuryugan. He takes the girl from the valley, sets up as an arms dealer, and moulds her into a bodyguard and enforcer, making her kill and pitting her in the Coliseum, where she beats the unbeaten champion Fushin on her first try. After Fushin and other captives break away to found the Lightning Group, Chino returns to the Valley of Hell; finding nothing of her parents there, she means to live out peaceful days until a dying Fushin comes to her with news of how Kirigakure betrayed the group, lighting the fuse of her vengeance.

In the events of Sasuke Shinden, Chino and Nowaki gather allies, bring a shipful of Kirigakure ninja under her Ketsuryugan, and convert captured shinobi from several villages into human bombs set to burst when hurt. Disguised as wandering entertainers, they draw Sasuke into hunting a rogue outfit they secretly pull the strings of. The trail ends at the Valley of Hell; there Chino lays out her past before turning to fight him, only for her deadliest jutsu to fail and a wounded Nowaki to fling himself into her defence. Realising she is not so alone after all, she gives up. Held in custody, she and Nowaki are brought before the Sixth Hokage, recast as the anime's Fifth Mizukage, and offered their freedom in return for hunting down the very injustices that once broke them, an offer they accept.
