Appearance

Tall and dark-skinned, Darui has a faintly bulbous nose, bored-looking black eyes, and messy platinum hair so pale it verges on white, with a fringe hiding his left eye. His outfit is a high-collared sleeveless top over baggy trousers, wrists wrapped in bandages, and the single-strapped Kumo flak jacket. A kanji for water sits on his right shoulder and one for lightning on his left, marking his twin chakra natures and, through the left symbol, both his Storm Release kekkei genkai and the black lightning handed down by his old master. A broad cleaver blade that folds shut rides on his back whenever he leaves the village.

In the years after the great war, once he holds the Raikage title, he grows taller and more muscular, sprouts a thin moustache and creases at his mouth much like his predecessor, and swaps the high collar for a hood.

Personality

Darui comes across as relaxed to the point of laziness, the sort who would rather stroll through an open door than leap out a window the way his boss does. His speech drags along slow and languid, forever tagging things as dull, a running joke on his own name, yet he is far from idle and throws himself in front of the Raikage the moment trouble flares. Apology is almost reflexive for him; he says sorry so often, even for the blunders of others, that the word nearly rivals dull, a habit he claims he never noticed. His loyalty to the Fourth runs deep, and he pointedly calls the man boss instead of adding an honorific, which earns him the label of second right hand and command of the First Division. He stays just as easygoing toward everyone else, excusing a late Naruto with the observation that a Kage juggling family duties leads a hectic life.

Abilities

Trained in his youth by the Third Raikage alongside his comrade C, Darui absorbs his master's signature black lightning, a technique granted to no one else, which sharpens every one of his lightning attacks. He wields wind, water, and lightning alike, can pin a foe inside a wall of water and run a current through it, and merges water with lightning into Storm Release, loosing beams of light that steer like guided missiles in his Laser Circus. His black lightning drives moves such as the Black Panther, and a shadow clone lets him double its force. Carrying an odd sword that folds in half to sheathe, he fights as a gifted swordsman, matching Suigetsu's huge blade and using a lightning-charged strike to pin him against a wall.

Picked to guard the Fourth Raikage, Darui escorts his boss to the Kage summit convened in the Land of Iron and repeatedly steps between him and the other leaders' guards. When the Allied Shinobi Forces take shape, he is handed the First Division. Moving to guard the Land of Lightning's coastline, he opens the fighting by frying swarms of White Zetsu clones, then squares off with the Gold and Silver Brothers, brought back through reincarnation, who fight with the fabled relics called the Treasured Tools. Nearly on his own he overcomes the pair, and even after drawing on three of those relics at once he still keeps chakra to spare. He seals Ginkaku inside the Benihisago and, with Team 10 backing him, traps Kinkaku within the Kohaku no Jōhei, then joins the assault on the Ten-Tails before slipping under the Infinite Tsukuyomi with everyone else.

Years on, his skill grows enough to make him the Fifth Raikage, the only holder of that office never named A. Against the twin brothers' gourd, which swallows anyone who speaks his own most-used word, he first dodges the trap by not saying dull, blurts it out by accident, then survives by making sorry his most-frequent word instead. As Kage he keeps Kumo steady, dispatches teams after dangers like the stolen Hashirama cells and the group Kara, and trades blows head-on with the Ōtsutsuki Momoshiki before Boruto turns the fight; even his taijutsu invites comparison to Naruto's and Sasuke's.
