Appearance

Tall and pale of skin, greyish beige in the manga and white in the anime, Hamura had smooth, hairless brow ridges and small horn-like bumps on his forehead. His mother's Byakugan sat in both eyes, and his white hair, cropped short in youth, later fell to his waist, with short bangs on the left and a chin-length lock hanging at the right. He favoured a light, full-length kimono ringed at its high collar with six black magatama, paired with dark trousers, a sheathed sword at his left hip, and a dark crescent-moon Yin mark on his left palm.

By old age he had grown gaunt, his ribs faintly showing and his face deeply lined, his brows heavier and his hair faded to grey. In those years he wore a white ceremonial kimono with a broad black collar and a pale green sash draped over one shoulder.

Personality

Hamura prized peace and freedom enough to imprison his own mother and end her tyranny, yet duty kept him bound to her afterward, watching over her sealed body on the Moon. The anime shows that he never stopped loving Kaguya even in rebellion, understanding that her cruelties sprang from her own twisted wish to protect those she cared for, which is partly why he chose to stay near her seal. His devotion to Hagoromo ran just as deep; he vowed to guard the world his brother built for a thousand years beyond his own death. As a youth he came across as brasher and more impatient, quick to voice his mind and to lean on his authority to keep order, and he referred to himself with the prouder ore where Hagoromo used the humbler watashi.

History

Born the second of Kaguya's twins, Hamura shared with Hagoromo the distinction of being the first humans to carry chakra. When Kaguya, as the Ten-Tails, tried to rip that power back out of jealous rage, the brothers fought and defeated her, locking her away with the Six Paths Chibaku Tensei. Hagoromo went on to split the Ten-Tails' chakra into the tailed beasts and seal its husk inside the Moon, while Hamura, on his brother's instruction to observe mankind for a full millennium, led the clan to the Moon to guard their mother's remains. There he wielded the Tenseigan to bring order to the lunar world before dying of old age among his kin.

The anime expands his youth: raised in ignorance of Kaguya's true nature, he and Hagoromo grew horrified to learn that villagers who vanished during the God Tree's rituals were being sacrificed. Gamamaru revealed how their mother had eaten the tree's fruit, seized enormous power, and enslaved much of the world with the Infinite Tsukuyomi. When Kaguya brainwashed Hamura and set him against his brother, Hagoromo struck him down to break the control and healed him with a seal tag, and together they overcame their transformed mother once more.

Among the mightiest figures in history, Hamura felled the Ten-Tails at his brother's side and inherited Kaguya's formidable chakra. He fought with a sword and a shakujō, mastered the Six Paths Senjutsu that let him fly and, joining his Yin power to Hagoromo's Yang, drove the colossal sealing of the Ten-Tails. He could manifest nine Truth-Seeking Balls, and as a Byakugan wielder he commanded near all-around sight, x-ray vision, and the ability to perceive the chakra pathway system. His eyes were pure enough that he alone among his line naturally awakened the evolved Tenseigan, and alone could destroy it.

Before his death he sealed the Tenseigan's power into an Energy Vessel, which his lunar descendants would misuse against the clan's main family. Centuries on, Toneri Ōtsutsuki, the branch family's last survivor, twisted Hamura's celestial decree and moved to drag the Moon down onto the Earth. Hamura's spirit then appeared to Hinata Hyūga, naming her the Byakugan Princess and the only one able to destroy the Vessel, and lent her his chakra so she could withstand Toneri and shatter it. His bloodline on Earth had become the Hyūga clan, carrying the Byakugan down through the generations, though his own deeds faded from memory far more than his celebrated brother's.
