Appearance

Fair-skinned and of average build, Ino has pale green eyes, coloured blue in the animated series, beneath long blonde hair whose bangs drape across the right half of her face. Cropped short in early childhood, her hair reached her hips and rode in a high ponytail through much of Part I, was cut to shoulder length during the Chūnin Exams, and returned to a hip-length tail with thicker bangs by Part II. In her adult years the style echoes her Part II look, the ponytail falling to her upper back and fixed with a black clip. She favours purple, pairing a tall-collared blouse with a matching apron skirt, and adjusts it over the years with bandages and arm warmers, then exposed midriff and mesh armour, and during the war the standard Leaf flak jacket. Asuma's stud earrings replaced her old hoops in Part II, and as an adult she again bares her midriff over open-toed sandals.

Personality

Bold, confident and outspoken from childhood, Ino keeps a mild temper but will snap at habits that grate on her, and she naturally takes charge of those around her, a trait she passes to her son Inojin. Beneath the pushy exterior she is warm and loyal, raised to embody the candid, bond-treasuring love of the bush clover. She first befriended Sakura by defending her from bullies and coaxing her out of her shyness, only for their friendship to sour into a bitter rivalry once both fell for Sasuke, trading the barbs 'Ino-pig' and 'Billboard Brow' before rekindling their bond on friendlier, still-competitive terms after the Chūnin Exams. Fiercely devoted to her team, she promised the dying Asuma she would watch over Shikamaru and Chōji. Though she long carried a torch for Sasuke, her heart eventually turned to Sai, who resembles him; she risks her life to rescue him in Shikamaru Hiden, and the two marry and raise Inojin, her love for her husband as giddy as ever. As a mother she respects her clan's traditions and hopes to see a new Ino-Shika-Chō, yet refuses to force Inojin down a path he does not choose, and she strives to honour her late father by leading the Yamanaka in his stead.

Abilities

Even as a genin Ino was singled out as a kunoichi who might one day become the strongest of her clan, and her growth through the years bore that out, earning her father's praise and, in time, leadership of the Konoha Barrier Team plus a role interrogating suspects on the Analysis Team. Her signature strength is her clan's mind-affecting arts: the Mind Body Switch Technique lets her seize control of a target, though it leaves her own body exposed, and she later masters variants that possess multiple foes at once or forge telepathic links across an entire army. Throughout the Fourth Shinobi World War she connected the whole Allied Shinobi Forces through her mind, relayed sensed information into her allies, and taught a protective jutsu across the ranks under Shikaku's plans; in later years her range stretched past a hundred kilometres and across several independent channels. As one of the finest sensors of her clan she can lock onto and read chakra signatures instantly, and she can probe an injured person's memories without a machine. She trained as a medical-nin under Tsunade in the anime, wielded anaesthetic-laced weapons, and could transfer chakra to keep failing comrades alive. She commands Earth, Water, Yin, Yang and later Fire natures, deceives opponents with hair traps and feints, and graduated at the top of her Academy class, once deducing Pain's remote-control method from its resemblance to Yamanaka techniques.
