A member of the Otsutsuki Clan and mother of Hagoromo and Hamura, she became the first person on Earth to wield chakra after eating the God Tree's forbidden fruit. Worshipped as a goddess and then feared as a demon, she was sealed by her own sons and revived ages later during the Fourth Shinobi World War.
Pale, grey-tinged skin and gentle features frame a face crowned by two skin-colored horns and, at the center of her forehead, the crimson third eye of the Rinne Sharingan. Her white hair sweeps to enormous length, trailing along the ground once she consumes the fruit, and her nails darken and grow long to match. Blank white eyes, a coat of red on her lips, and the short, rounded brows that once signaled high birth complete the noble look, worn over a high-collared kimono patterned in tomoe and dark trim. When her power runs wild, she swells into a colossal rabbit-shaped horror: a humanoid torso with gnashing teeth, her third eye still burning above, and a vast sphere of chakra on its back sprouting the heads of all nine tailed beasts.
By Hagoromo's account his mother was, at heart, once genuinely kind, a woman who ached for peace and came to love the emperor Tenji and her handmaiden Aino, even if she rarely voiced any warmth. Toward those outside that small circle she could be merciless and treacherous, as when she struck down her own clansman Isshiki, and her affection had limits; she trapped Tenji in an eternal dream the moment he crossed her, and later took her son Hamura hostage to wrench back the chakra she had freely given her children. Much of that cruelty grew from a mother's resolve to shield her sons from the clan she had abandoned.
The God Tree's fruit hollowed that resolve into tyranny. Convinced chakra belonged to her alone and that only she could unite the world, she lost all faith in a humanity she saw as endlessly warring, and bent every living soul to her will, ruling until people who had hailed her as a goddess came to dread her as a demon. She speaks of herself with the archaic, regal warawa, regards the Earth as a nursery she refuses to let anyone spoil, and yet, gazing at Naruto and Sasuke, weeps at how sharply they recall the sons she claims to hate. Naruto found her the one enemy he could not reach, sensing a being too far gone to reconcile with.
Kaguya and Isshiki were dispatched to Earth to raise a God Tree and gather its Chakra Fruit for their clan's ruling family, but she coveted the fruit for herself and left Isshiki for dead. In the anime she settled among the people of the Land of Ancestors as the emperor Tenji's concubine, slowly growing fond of the world she had come to strip. Disillusioned with humanity yet still craving peace, she defied the taboo and ate the fruit, awakening the Rinne Sharingan and becoming the only being on Earth to hold chakra. She ended the age of war single-handedly and was revered as the Rabbit Goddess, but fear of her clan's revenge led her to cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi and convert much of mankind into the White Zetsu Army.
She bore the twins Hagoromo and Hamura and passed chakra to them, the first children born with it. In time her hunger for power turned her against her sons, and she merged with the God Tree to become the Ten-Tails and reclaim their chakra by force. After months of struggle the brothers sealed her, casting the beast's husk skyward to form the Moon, unaware that she had already spun off her will as Black Zetsu. For centuries that fragment steered the Uchiha and Senju toward awakening the Rinnegan, and once Madara obtained it, Black Zetsu used his body to resurrect her during the Fourth Shinobi World War.
Restored, Kaguya hurled Team 7 through a chain of warped dimensions, absorbing techniques and nearly overwhelming them, until Naruto and Sasuke landed the seals of the Six Paths, Chibaku Tensei on her. She reverted to the Ten-Tails and was drawn into a fresh sphere that became a new moon, with Black Zetsu banished there too, ending her threat for good. Long afterward, Sasuke's research into the scroll she left behind proved vital in confronting the Otsutsuki who followed her.
