Appearance

Her most recognizable look wraps her in a broad red mesh garment whose bandage-like fabric carries a rose-thorn pattern, leaving only the right sleeve on show. Bandages also bind her hands and upper thighs, finished with a Konoha forehead protector and ordinary shinobi sandals. Slim and fair-skinned, she keeps untidy black hair falling to her upper back, and her crimson eyes each hold an extra ring. Purple shadow and red lipstick complete the styling, the lipstick a sly nod to one reading of her name.

Earlier records place her in the standard Konoha vest over a plain sleeveless red top, and her genin version already bore the signature thorns, pink in girlhood and reddening with age. Pregnancy put her in a loose maternal dress, and two years after the Fourth Shinobi World War she trims her hair to the shoulders and layers a burgundy sleeveless shirt with orange stripes over a black long-sleeve. Well into middle age she adopts a red kimono cinched with a white belt.

Personality

Warm-hearted and courageous, Kurenai invests herself deeply in the growth of her pupils, watching over Hinata Hyūga with special tenderness because she understands how the girl's own father regarded her. She once nudged Naruto Uzumaki into accepting Hinata's offered medicine, aware of the crush her student was hiding. Straightforward and plain-spoken, she carries an unbending streak and is often cast as the reliable elder-sister figure of her circle.

Her long attachment to fellow jonin Asuma Sarutobi threads through the story, the pair rarely apart, and a teasing question from Kakashi about a date once left her flustered enough to invent an errand. She grew visibly anxious over Asuma's clash with the Akatsuki, and news of his death dropped her to her knees in tears before she laid flowers at his grave. The bond became undeniable when she revealed she was carrying his child, Mirai. As a widowed mother she proved more than capable, raising a bright and dependable daughter while showing a stern edge whenever Mirai turned reckless, enough that the girl dreaded the scoldings her mistakes would bring.

History

As a child Kurenai befriended Asuma at the Academy's entrance ceremony and graduated at nine, rising to chunin by thirteen and reaching jonin shortly before Team 8 came together. During the Nine-Tails' rampage she and other young shinobi wanted to drive the beast back, but the elders, her father among them, held them out of the fight; he reminded her that a shinobi's life is short and that he wished her to survive and carry on the Will of Fire. Her natural gift for illusions made her Konoha's leading practitioner of the art, her skill spoken of in the same breath as Itachi Uchiha, who acknowledged it himself. Most of her techniques draw on plant imagery, binding foes with towering trees or scattering flower petals, and she can see through an illusion at once, snare several enemies together, and even turn a caster's own genjutsu back on them.

The Third Hokage assigned her to train Yakumo Kurama, though the girl's uncontrollable power forced Kurenai to seal her abilities away, a decision that weighed on them both until the two later made peace. Alongside Guy and Asuma she also urged Hiruzen to pull Kakashi out of the Anbu and set him on the path of a teacher. Through the Chunin Exams she watched her students from the stands and marveled at Naruto's upset victories, and when Itachi and Kisame slipped into the village she and Asuma engaged them, Kurenai briefly trapping the Uchiha before his reflected illusion nearly killed her.

Her romance with Asuma ended in grief during his mission against Hidan and Kakuzu, and once pregnant she stepped back from active duty, eventually retiring to raise Mirai full time. She surfaces across later chapters attending Naruto and Hinata's wedding, advising the Academy teacher Shino, and recounting Hyūga history to a young Boruto so he could choose the right gift for Hiashi.
