Tricked by a sand decoy, Lee squares off against the real Gaara and reaches deeper into the Eight Gates, opening the Third and unnerving even his opponent, as Guy and Neji recall the boy's fierce climb from failure.
The Lee that had been struck turns out to be nothing but a hollow decoy shaped from sand, and the real Gaara resurfaces to face him. Lee, drained from calling on the Front Lotus once more, this time bounces back with unexpected speed, showing that he can open the Second Gate. He then pushes further and unlocks the Third Gate, a surge of power that rattles even Gaara.
As the fight unfolds, Guy and Neji drift into memories of Lee from the days before he became a genin and the period just after. Those recollections trace his stubborn drive to earn recognition as a worthy ninja by mastering taijutsu alone, a path he walked despite lacking any talent for ninjutsu or genjutsu.
