The Surprise Attack Division is a battalion of the Allied Shinobi Forces assembled from fighters gifted at ambush warfare. Placed under Kankurō's command, the unit strikes from cover and traps, and it clashes with a reanimated enemy squad built for the very same tactics.
Known also as the Commando Unit, the Surprise Attack Division is a formation within the Allied Shinobi Forces whose members were grouped together for a shared talent: launching ambushes. Kankurō captains the battalion, which was raised to hit enemies before they can react during the Fourth Shinobi World War.
The division opens its campaign by flying into hostile ground aboard Sai's ink birds and making camp in thick forest. Kankurō parcels out duties across the team: Omoi rigs the perimeter with traps, Sai watches from above, Ittan digs trenches with Earth Release, Tango builds a chakra relay antenna, Zaji and Hoheto sweep the surroundings with their sensory skills, and Kiri helps plan the fight. Their first contact comes when Zaji picks up a wounded Muta Aburame, whose gourd, spotted by Hoheto's Byakugan, is packed with explosive clay. The reincarnated Surprise Attack and Diversion Platoon then springs its trap, with Sasori puppeteering Muta to pin Zaji until the clay bursts. Kankurō yanks Zaji clear while Ittan drops the earth to blunt the blast.
Sasori keeps up the assault by turning captured foes and Shin against the division, though Sai knocks Shin down and Omoi severs the strings controlling Ranka and Tokuma so Kiri can mend them. The fighting swings the Leaf's way as Sai conjures his enormous drawings to fling Deidara and Sasori into Kankurō's puppets, where Kankurō seals them and Omoi drives a lightning-charged blade into Deidara to kill his remaining bombs. Both enemy souls find peace afterward, and Sasori hands his Mother and Father puppets to Kankurō before departing. Later, a scouting group of Sai, Zaji, and Omoi runs into the revived Haku, Zabuza, Gari, and Pakura and is rescued by the Third Division, while the rest of the battalion, cornered again and poisoned by Hanzō's summon Ibuse, is saved by Mifune and his Fifth Division samurai.
Kankurō leads the division as captain and coordinates its every move, later inheriting Sasori's puppets. Sai provides both aerial transport and heavy attacks through his ink drawings, while Omoi handles traps and lightning techniques. Hoheto lends his Byakugan for reconnaissance, Zaji serves as a sensor, Ittan shapes the battlefield with Earth Release, Tango maintains communications, and Kiri assists with strategy and healing.
