Team Kabuto

Presenting themselves as genin-ranked shinobi of Konohagakure, the members of this squad are in truth Otogakure operatives. Their real errand at the Chunin Exams is to watch Sasuke Uchiha on Orochimaru's behalf. Kabuto handled that surveillance most effectively of all, yet he pulled out of the competition before the preliminary bouts began.

With Kabuto gone, the task of measuring Sasuke's strength passed to Yoroi Akado, who lost to the Uchiha in the opening preliminary duel. Misumi Tsurugi was likewise beaten by his own opponent, Kankuro. In the anime the story stretches further: Yoroi and Misumi resurface in the Land of the Sea aiding Amachi, one of Orochimaru's researchers, and both are presumed dead after Misumi is caught in a collapsing cave and Yoroi vanishes beneath the sea.

Kabuto Yakushi, Yoroi Akado, and Misumi Tsurugi make up the trio, their names forming a helmet, armor, and sword set, and each of them wears glasses just like their teacher. Yoroi, Misumi, and the unnamed leader drop out of the manga after the exams, though the leader turns up in anime cameos, notably at Hiruzen Sarutobi's funeral and later as part of the Niju Shotai. All three fighters served as Orochimaru's spies, yet whether the sensei shared that allegiance is unclear, even though he had studied under Orochimaru.
