Atsuko Tanaka was a Japanese voice actress who originated the Japanese-language voice of Major Motoko Kusanagi, the cyborg protagonist of the Ghost in the Shell franchise, starting with the 1995 feature film.
Tanaka voiced Major Motoko Kusanagi, the elite cyborg operative who leads Public Security Section 9, beginning with the original 1995 Ghost in the Shell feature and continuing across the franchise's later television and film installments. Her controlled, understated delivery defined how Japanese audiences heard the character for nearly three decades. The performance remained the single credit most associated with her name for the rest of her career.
Raised in Maebashi, Tanaka discovered acting in her youth and trained at the Tokyo Announcement Academy after years working an office job in Tokyo, eventually signing with Mausu Promotion, the agency she stayed with for the rest of her career. Her other credits span Konan from Naruto, the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure fighter Lisa Lisa, Chun-Li from the Street Fighter III fighting game, and the title witch of the Bayonetta series, with a late-career turn as Hanami in Jujutsu Kaisen. She died on August 20, 2024, at 61.
