Gameplay

Players primarily control Edward, who transmutes objects scattered through each stage into weapons on the fly, while Alphonse fights alongside him under AI control to handle groups of enemies. This transmutation focused combat became the template the two later PS2 sequels built on.

Story

Edward and Alphonse investigate chimera creatures appearing across the countryside and cross paths with a girl named Armony. Their search leads back to a researcher named Wilheim, and the brothers eventually learn Armony resulted from his daughter Selene being fused with a strange catalyst substance, a twist that echoes the manga's recurring horror around forbidden human experimentation.

Reception

Racjin developed the game and Square Enix published it in Japan on December 25, 2003, and in North America on January 18, 2005. Reviews were mixed, with Metacritic settling at 56 out of 100; IGN gave it 6.4 out of 10 and GameRevolution went as low as a D minus, while critics praised the story and character writing but knocked the graphics and combat's resemblance to Kingdom Hearts. It still sold about 250,000 copies in Japan by 2004.
