The Last Battle is the 107th chapter of Fullmetal Alchemist, opening volume 27 in the final push of the Promised Day. It is remembered for its ensemble cover art and for Edward's closing taunt at Father, which deliberately echoes the manga's very first chapter.
The penultimate chapter of the manga sits within the Promised Day Arc and begins the twenty-seventh collected volume. It carries the climactic struggle against Father toward its conclusion, bridging Pride's Abyss and the finale, Journey's End.
The installment closes on a pointed callback. Edward hurls a challenge at Father, telling the weakened homunculus to get up and daring him to see that there is no comparison between them. The line mirrors almost word for word the taunt Ed threw at Father Cornello in the series' opening chapter, bookending the story with the same defiant phrasing at its start and near its end.
The chapter's splash page carries a printing slip, spelling the word Alchemist as Alcemist. Its cover offers a large group portrait in which allies who stand close to the heroes but were absent from the actual final fight reach in from off the page, each clutching a signature item: Maes Hughes with a photo of Elicia, Fu in his gauntlet, Jean Havoc with a cigarette, Winry Rockbell holding a wrench, Buccaneer beside his automail arm, and, curiously, the antagonist Solf J. Kimblee gripping his white fedora. Two unnamed figures fill the lower left corner, a regular Central soldier in blue and a Briggs soldier in white, and Pinako Rockbell's hair peeks in beside Winry's arm.
The art quietly acknowledges that several of these figures do not belong in the scene. Every named off-panel character is deceased except Winry and Havoc, and Winry alone is shown without injury. Breda and Fuery register visible surprise at Havoc's appearance, Maria Ross glances back in shock at Kimblee, and two men beneath Buccaneer's automail look up at him. The chapter's Japanese title is Saigo no Tatakai, released in Japan on May 12, 2010, and in English on December 20, 2011.
