Jump Super Stars is a 2D crossover fighting game for Nintendo DS built around Weekly Shonen Jump manga characters, not a Naruto exclusive title. Ganbarion developed it, Nintendo published it in Japan in 2005, and Naruto is one of 27 series represented alongside Dragon Ball and One Piece.

Crossover Roster & Naruto's Place

Twenty seven Weekly Shonen Jump series are represented across the roster, led by Dragon Ball with 15 characters, Naruto with 12, and One Piece with 8. Naruto's slice of that roster includes Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura, and Kakashi as playable fighters, with Shikamaru, Rock Lee, Neji, and Hinata available as support characters, making the game a showcase for the whole magazine rather than a Naruto specific release.

Gameplay

Battles run on a koma deck system: players fill a 4 by 5 grid of panels with help koma that grant passive boosts, support koma that assist briefly in combat, and battle koma, the main fighters players switch between mid fight. Players can build and save up to ten decks, and placing koma next to compatible partners grants bonuses. The game supports 2 to 4 player multiplayer and offers more than 75 single player missions.

Development & Reception

Nintendo SPD head Hitoshi Yamagami commissioned the project from Ganbarion, and the team built it in under a year to accompany the Japanese launch of a red Nintendo DS model on August 8, 2005. It never released outside Japan. Metacritic lists an aggregate score of 80, and the game sold over 200,000 copies in its first week on its way to lifetime sales past 460,000 units.
