Gameplay

The core 2D fighting carries over from earlier Ultimate Ninja games, with one new twist: landing certain hits triggers a flashing, high speed clash between the two fighters that gets settled by a rock paper scissors style exchange rather than a straight damage trade. Master Mode replaces the older free roam Ultimate Contest with a proper action adventure structure, sending the player through quests and battles as Naruto explores different locations.

Story

Master Mode opens with an original prequel storyline called The Black Shadow, set before Shippūden begins, then moves into the Shippūden plot itself, though the adapted story only runs up to around the midpoint of the Kazekage Rescue mission.
