The Baumeister family is a wealthy noble house in Attack on Titan: Before the Fall, comfortable in the Walls' political circles until misfortune and arrest whittle it down to a single heir, the good-natured Cardina.
Aristocrats with government ties reaching back at least fifty years before Wall Maria's fall, the Baumeisters move easily among the Walls' other elite houses, including the Inocencio family, and treat political trading and backroom dealing as ordinary business.
Cardina Baumeister enrolls in military training but walks away before completing it, and political turmoil later lands him in a jail cell. His father Bruno dies of unstated causes, leaving Cardina the house's only known survivor. From his cell Cardina strikes up a friendship with a fellow prisoner named Kuklo, passing the time with a story about the city of Naraka. Two weeks later both men are bound in a wagon headed out as Titan feed; Kuklo obtains a knife and frees everyone's bonds, but only he and Cardina choose to jump, the other prisoners having resigned themselves to death. Racing to the base of Wall Maria, they spot a soldier's light above. Cardina rescues Kuklo from a Titan during the climb, and the two are hoisted up together by Jorge Pikale of the Military Police, an old comrade of Cardina's.
In the Industrial City, Cardina weathers a hostile greeting from Sharle Inocencio, takes lodging in a factory house, and works to impress the foreman Xenophon Harkimo, planning to enter the Survey Corps at Kuklo's side.
Cardina Baumeister, alive and affiliated with the Survey Corps, and his deceased father Bruno are the family's only named members.
