His black hair is cropped short and tapers into sideburns that meet a very short beard, and a bushy moustache sits above his lip. Around his forehead he ties a small headband of twisted, rope-like cord.

He is devoted to his trade to an almost obsessive degree, studying a subject's face closely and even dreaming of it so his carving will be flawless. That same devotion turns to fury when his labour is wasted, as when Danzō Shimura falls in battle before the mason can so much as start on his likeness.

Around the time of the Five Kage Summit, he is set to carve the face of the Sixth Hokage candidate when his assistant brings word that Danzō has been killed, leaving him incensed after all the effort spent perfecting his mental image of the man. He next latches onto Kakashi Hatake, pulling him aside before an urgent meeting with the Fire Daimyō to measure his face and lay down thin coats of plaster for a mould, and he insists Kakashi lower his mask, arguing a hidden face makes for a poor monument. Before he can finish, his assistant returns once more to report that Kakashi is no longer Hokage, the Fifth having woken from her coma, to the carver's renewed frustration. The character for stone is stitched onto the back of his garb.
