Development and Release

Dimps develops One Piece for the Game Boy Advance, and Bandai publishes it in North America on September 7, 2005, marketed there under the Shonen Jump's One Piece banner. The game never releases in Japan or Europe, making it the only mainline One Piece video game to launch exclusively in North America. Much of its sprite work and music get reused from Dimps' earlier WonderSwan Color title, One Piece Grand Battle: Swan Colosseum.

Gameplay

Players control Monkey D. Luffy across platforming stages using a one button masher combo system, while other Straw Hat crew members like Roronoa Zoro can be called in as assist summons. Story mode offers 15 playable characters and pits players against 12 bosses, including Buggy the Clown, Don Krieg, Arlong, and Smoker, who appears under the localized name Chaser. Stages contain interactive environmental objects and can be revisited to collect items pulled from the original manga and anime.

Story and Reception

The game loosely adapts the East Blue Saga, following Luffy's early recruitment of his crew as they sail toward the Grand Line in search of the One Piece treasure. Critics respond with a positive to average reception, reflected in a 76 on Metacritic, a 72.3 percent aggregate on GameRankings, a 4 out of 5 from GameSpy, and an 8 out of 10 from Nintendo Power.
