Appearance

The Makai Tree takes the form of an enormous sentient plant that once grew on a distant ocean world. Physical strikes cannot pierce it, and its foliage grows as pod-shaped leaves rather than ordinary greenery. A central pod sits within its core, and it can visibly shift between a withered and a thriving state to signal its condition.

History

For untold years the tree lived in solitude on an island ringed by a wide sea. In time it chose to bring forth life, shaping humanoid alien offspring and feeding them its own energy. The children eventually grew covetous and turned on one another over that power, and their conflict tore their homeworld apart. In the original English dub this backstory was rewritten so that outside evil corrupted the children instead.

Fleeing into space with the few survivors, the tree was eventually left with just two young ones, Ail and An, and had weakened to the point that it needed the power of love to endure. The pair tried to feed it using Cardians, never grasping that affection was the nourishment it truly wanted, until the tree itself finally spoke. It admitted that energy seized by force had been slowly poisoning it and begged Sailor Moon to save it. Her cleansing power made it vanish, and many feared it had been destroyed. Once Ail and An made peace, a tiny sapling appeared before them, showing it had returned to life, and the two left Earth with the sprout to find a fresh world.

Abilities

Defensively, the tree spits corrosive fluid from its pods and lashes out with vines and roots strong enough to pin a victim or hurl them against solid ground. It feeds by drawing life energy directly through its roots and branches, and even a single detached twig can siphon vitality from any living thing. Ail notes that the plant can refine this stolen energy into a form suited to their alien bodies by extending a particular pod from its trunk.
