Emma

Emma is shown with warm auburn hair and clear blue eyes, the coloring of the rural English folk she lives among. She reads as an ordinary countrywoman of her time, carrying none of the markings of rank or wealth.

The adaptation reveals little of Emma's inner temperament. What the story does convey is her place at the center of a close family, a mother guiding Einar and her daughter Lotta through the ordinary rhythms of home and farm before catastrophe struck.

Emma passed her days in a small settlement in northern England, sharing a calm and unremarkable existence with her husband and their two children. That peace ended when Viking raiders fell upon the community. The attack claimed Emma's life along with much of what her son held dear, and it set the surviving Einar on the road into slavery that opens his arc.

Because she was written for the anime rather than the manga, Emma never appears by name in the original pages. Many readers nonetheless identify her with the veiled dead woman glimpsed in one of Einar's earliest flashbacks.
