Root is part of the guest voice roster on Invincible, the adult animated superhero series Skybound Entertainment produces for Prime Video based on Robert Kirkman's comic. His decades of voice work, including his long running King of the Hill roles, made him a natural addition to the show's expansive cast of one off and recurring characters. He joins a long list of veteran character actors who have popped up in the series across its multiple seasons.
Root made his name playing station manager Jimmy James on NBC's NewsRadio through the late 1990s and the memorably deadpan Milton Waddams in the film Office Space, while also lending his voice to Bill Dauterive and Buck Strickland across King of the Hill's original run and its 2025 revival. He has turned up repeatedly in Coen brothers films, from O Brother, Where Art Thou? to No Country for Old Men, and earned an Emmy nomination for his supporting turn as a hitman's handler on HBO's Barry. His long list of television credits also spans Star Trek: The Next Generation, True Blood, Boardwalk Empire, Succession, and the 2026 series Widow's Bay.
