History
Married to Balzac during his kinder years, Annette falls gravely ill, and her husband's frantic search for a remedy leads him to a fragment of the Mandragora Heart. The extract he makes from it preserves her body and even freezes her aging, but it strips away her memories and her mind. Convinced the rest of the relic could restore her, Balzac descends into cruelty chasing after it. Left to wander, Annette is found by Puck, who mistakes her for the baron's daughter, and she quickly warms to Casca. Guts and Rita eventually learn who she really is and leave her beside the dying Balzac. When his blood touches a beherit that Rita had unknowingly dropped, the baron gives up Annette's life to the God Hand, sacrificing her in his bid to be reborn as an apostle. Her fate deliberately mirrors Casca's in reverse, another woman hollowed out and offered up by the man who loved her.
