CharacterBarbo is a Midland criminal and self-styled strongest of the convicts drafted into war. His challenge to Wyald for leadership of the conscripted prisoners ends almost at once, and fatally, atop a tower spire.
Appearance
Little is recorded of Barbo's looks beyond an imposing, brutish build. Among the imprisoned convicts he answered to the name Armor Hacker.
Personality
Barbo is crude and swaggering, so unlettered that Wyald's mention of charisma leaves him unable even to pronounce the word. He is certain he is the mightiest of the prisoners and therefore the rightful leader over Wyald.
History
In the king's recollection, set five years before Griffith broke free, a shortage of soldiers led the crown to conscript every able-bodied criminal into the army. When Wyald claimed the right to lead as the strongest among them, Barbo shoved forward to dispute it, sneering at his rival as a monkey and proposing they settle the matter in combat. The king consents. Barbo takes up a heavy mace while Wyald refuses the weapon and armor he is offered, and in the clash Barbo somehow ends up run through and hoisted atop a tower, his corpse mockingly dubbed a monument to the king. Wyald likens the dead man to an octopus.
