Hanged Man

Character

Hanged Man is the Stand of the assassin J. Geil in Stardust Crusaders, a light-based killer that survives only inside reflective surfaces. It strikes at a person's reflection rather than their body, darting between mirrors, water and even a victim's eyes at light speed.

Overview

Wielded by the killer J. Geil in Stardust Crusaders, Hanged Man is a Long-Distance Stand named for the tarot card of the same title. Its form suggests a bandaged mummy laced with mechanical parts, half of its brain left bare, and like its master it carries two right hands. Coarse and rock-like in texture, it reads as grey in the colored manga and brown across the anime and games. In truth it is a creature of light that can exist only within reflective surfaces, hopping from one to the next so convincingly that it seems to dwell inside them.

Mechanics

Because it lashes out from within reflections, the Stand is dreadfully hard to guard against. Instead of touching a victim directly, it appears in a mirror, a puddle or any shiny surface and strikes at the person's reflected image, whereupon the real body suffers the wound as though hit by nothing at all. It can race through any reflecting medium, human eyes included, at the speed of light. The catch is that it can only travel between surfaces along a straight line, and if its current perch stops reflecting, say a shattered mirror or a closed eye, it must leap to whatever reflection lies directly ahead. During that jump it is exposed, and a fast enough Stand can catch it in transit, harming both it and J. Geil, especially once its path is forced into a predictable route. For close work, each of its two right hands can extrude blades from the wrist, finer than a razor and sharp enough to open a chest or slice a snake apart.

Notable Users

J. Geil alone commands Hanged Man, which shows no will of its own beyond obeying him. The tarot card it represents normally stands for virtue and wisdom, qualities neither the Stand nor its user possess, though reversed the card signifies selfishness, a fitting nod given that the Stand lives in reflections where all things appear flipped.
