Overview

Joseph Joestar wields Hermit Purple, a Stand prominent in Stardust Crusaders that resurfaces in Diamond is Unbreakable. It manifests as clusters of purple, thorn-studded vines that erupt from Joseph's hands, sturdy enough to bear his weight and long enough to wrap a person completely. Always rendered in its namesake purple, though duller in Part 4 as Joseph ages, the Stand answers to the tarot card The Hermit, a symbol of introspection that suits its powers of divination.

Mechanics

On their own the vines are fairly weak, but they serve Joseph as versatile ropes he can whip about at will, swinging from place to place, binding a foe, or even nimbly working a video game controller, though a strong Stand or a vampire can snap them. Their real value lies in divination: by channeling the Stand through some object, Joseph can conjure almost any information he wants to see. He produces psychic photographs by smashing a camera, coaxes live psychic footage from a television, whether flicking through channels to spell out a message or displaying a distant location, checks machines for tampering, and sketches maps into roadside dust with an X marking a hidden item. The power grows sharper the nearer he is to his subject, so a shot of Dio taken across the world showed only darkness while one from the same country revealed his exact hideout. Joseph can also send the Ripple down the vines as an extension of himself, striking with them or wrapping them around his body like a cloak of live wires.

Notable Users

Joseph Joestar is the Stand's owner, relying on it far more for reconnaissance and detective work than for fighting. Notably, Dio wields a strikingly similar Hermit Purple of his own, using it to spy through cameras and crystal balls, though he never displays the vine-binding trick that Joseph favors.
