Dark purple eyes and a firm jawline define his face, framed by tousled hair of neck length that reads green in the manga and grey in the anime. Thick purple cord winds across his chest above a tan shirt, and he pairs black wristbands with black trousers.

Described as steadfast and brimming with self-assurance, he holds his comrades close. That devotion defines his end: offered a final request as Orochimaru moved to seize his body, he spent it on his fellow captives' freedom rather than on saving himself.

Little of his combat is shown, since his one glimpsed fight appears only as a blur, yet being selected as a vessel hints at real strength, and he is seen tearing an enemy's head clean off and hurling it away with no weapon in hand. His downfall begins during the hunt for Sasuke. With Orochimaru's own body ruined, Kabuto forces Gen'yūmaru and a crowd of prisoners into a death match, promising the winner a granted wish. He prevails, only to face a terrifying vision of a giant serpent poised to swallow him as Orochimaru arrives. Learning he is to become the next host, he asks that his clan go free, then surrenders to his fate. Three years on, his body starts rejecting its occupant, driving Orochimaru to lunge for Sasuke's body instead; when Sasuke strikes the weakened Sannin, Orochimaru casts the worn vessel aside. Gen'yūmaru afterward lingers among the other discarded souls inside Orochimaru's mind. The film Bonds shows that same failing body leaving Orochimaru bedridden, prompting him to send Sasuke after Shinnō and his regeneration methods, though only a scroll of the needed knowledge is ever recovered.
