Thorfinn, Einar and Leif set out to seek a loan from Halfdan and cross paths with Gudrid, who longs to sail despite Leif's insistence that seafaring belongs to men and homekeeping to women. Defiant, she severs her ponytail and bolts for a boat, only to slip, strike her head, and drop unconscious.
Hoping to fund the Vinland venture, Thorfinn travels with Einar and Leif to petition Halfdan for money. Along the way they run into Gudrid, now noticeably older than she first appeared. She voices a wish to take a boat out onto the water, but Leif waves it off, telling her that sailing is a man's work while a woman's duty is guarding the home.
Rejecting that verdict, Gudrid cuts off her ponytail in protest and dashes toward a waiting boat. Before she can reach it she loses her footing, slips, and slams the back of her head as she goes down, knocking herself out.
