Gamaken

A sasumata rests in his grip and a broad sakazuki-style shield hangs at his back, the tools that define his silhouette. Magenta skin marked with black across the face, arms, and legs stretches over a body as large as Gamabunta's, tall enough to overshadow most buildings, trees, and rock formations. Blunt horn-like growths crown his head. He dresses in a black kimono, its waist bound by a white sash, over an underlayer of mesh armour.

Modesty verges on self-doubt with Gamaken. He apologizes constantly for being clumsy and carries a nervous air, repeating the complaint even mid-battle against Pain's summons. In practice he is no more graceful nor awkward than any other toad, and he vows each time to do his utmost. The affectionate nickname Ken-san lends him an air of dependability, the kind of ally who shows up exactly when a rescue is needed.

The anime first shows Jiraiya summoning him to slip out of Nadeshiko Village after some research for a novel. His real trials come against Pain. In the Tale of Jiraiya the Gallant, Jiraiya calls him to buy time while Sage Mode is prepared, and Gamaken absorbs a battering from a parade of animal summons, knocked around the tower until he tumbles into a sewer and is dismissed. Later, during Pain's assault on Konoha, he stands with Gamabunta and Gamahiro, driving his sasumata into the Animal Path's giant rhino and wounding it badly, then warning the others about the multi-headed dog's replicating trick a beat too late. When the Deva Path unleashes Shinra Tensei, all three toads are flung beyond the village, and Gamaken is found knocked out in the mountains. His fighting itself refutes the point his modesty keeps making: he wields the sasumata and shield with real command, using the shield to block and to swing like a flail, and in the anime he can even trigger explosions with his weapon.
