Sōzu is a professional gambler who runs a den in the Tanzaku Quarters of the Land of Fire. His fortunes are bound to Tsunade, the famously unlucky Sannin, who emptied her purse across his table more than once before he blew the winnings on the pleasures of the same town.
A loose-fitting black kimono trimmed in white forms his usual outfit. Above it sits a face marked by closely cropped dark hair, a goatee, and eyes of the same shadowed color.
Gambling is Sōzu's great love, and nothing lifts his mood like a run of wins. The arrival of Tsunade, saddled with the nickname the Legendary Sucker, once thrilled him and his fellow players so badly that they could scarcely keep their excitement in check, thankful for every coin she had surrendered at their table.
His gambling house counts among the many stops Tsunade made on her travels, and the money she lost there became a personal windfall that he tended to fritter away throughout Tanzaku Quarters. When Jiraiya passed through hunting for his old teammate, Sōzu caught the Sannin asking after her and shared what he knew, though only once a few drinks had been bought for him. He also turns up in Naruto Mobile as a recurring opponent in the Tanzaku setting, where he battles by hurling playing cards at his foe. Written as 索子, his name refers to the bamboo suit of mahjong tiles.
