Bacchus

The material keeps Bacchus's physical description vague, defining him far more by manner than by looks. He carries himself with the credibility of a doctor and answers to a name lifted from the Roman god of wine, a label he readily embraces given his own troubled history with drink. It is a fitting mask for a man whose whole trade depends on seeming more respectable than he actually is.

Bacchus is a career schemer, equal parts charm and calculation, comfortable spinning elaborate lies to bend a mark to his will. He works best in partnership, pairing with his nephew and other accomplices to build cons convincing enough to reshape a victim's entire life. When a plan collapses he turns pragmatic rather than sentimental, willing to abandon even family to save his own skin once the law closes in.

In 2068, Bacchus teamed with a man named Manley to exploit Faye Valentine, a woman revived from cryogenic sleep whose personal records had vanished. He handed her the surname Valentine, roused her from her long freeze, and manufactured a mountain of debts for her to owe, intending to press her into working them off. To sell the ruse, he had his nephew Whitney Haggis pose as a lawyer, and the deception took hold exactly as planned.

The pair went on scheming together for years. In 2071, Jet Black seized Haggis and hauled him aboard the Bebop, prompting Bacchus and Manley to commandeer a police patrol craft and pose as officers to recover him. Faye happened to be on the ship and snatched Haggis first, having spent three years believing him dead. Bacchus surfaced to confront her, and both men confessed they knew nothing of her past beyond the fact that she had been frozen. When the genuine police tracked their stolen vessel, Bacchus was forced to abandon Haggis and flee.
