Gameplay

Players move an Eva unit across a wide map, triggering encounters that open a menu of action commands to attack or defend against Angels and other threats, with combat sequences rendered in CG that reviewers singled out as a highlight. Multiple pilots, including Shinji, Rei, and Asuka, become playable as the story unlocks them, and the game includes 24 optional Classified Information entries that expand on lore like the Seeds of Life, the Spears of Longinus, and the Angels. Outside of Shinji's central arc, most other scenarios diverge freely from the anime's canon.

Development

Alfa System researched the source material closely while building the game, including compiling a lengthy questionnaire and sitting down for an interview with series creator Hideaki Anno that ran more than ten hours, aiming to keep the game's take on the Eva universe consistent with his intent.

Release and Reception

Bandai published the PlayStation 2 version in Japan on November 20, 2003, where it sold about 111,787 copies in its debut week. A PSP re-release followed on April 27, 2006 under the title Neon Genesis Evangelion 2: Another Cases, adding new events, scenarios, Angel battles, and endings.
