Appearance

Small in build and deep into old age, Comanche carries the mild, unthreatening look of somebody's kindly grandfather. Where one leg should be, a wooden peg takes its place, the original limb having been removed after the fighting in Ishval. A long, sweeping mustache tops off the appearance of a man few would ever mark as dangerous.

Personality

Behind the harmless exterior sits a man addicted to combat. When the military hands down its order to purge Ishval, Comanche is the lone alchemist grinning at the news, delighted rather than sobered by what lies ahead. Facing Scar years later, he greets the notorious murderer with a broad smile and praises the nerve it takes to challenge the Silver Alchemist head-on. Even crippled and outmatched, he treats mortal danger as sport.

History

Comanche steps into the story in Chapter 43, ambushed by Scar during a nighttime walk through Central, and returns in a wartime flashback set during the Ishvalan Civil War. Deployed as one of the State Alchemists under Order 3066, he takes a severe wound to the left leg, most likely from gunfire, and is hauled off on a stretcher swearing furiously; the then Captain Maes Hughes wryly remarks that the old man is lucky to head home early. The injury costs him the limb, and he fits a peg in its place.

Rather than flee his attacker, the Silver Alchemist welcomes the duel. His palms and fingers carry intricate transmutation markings, differing circles on each hand plus tiny ones on every fingertip, so he never has to press his hands together to work alchemy and only needs his gloves off. From these he conjures swords, shuriken, and chained blades, wielding all of them expertly while darting and spinning about on his prosthetic. He tries to sever Scar's left leg as payback for the one Ishval took from him, but manages only a shallow graze. When Scar's destructive alchemy shatters the peg, Comanche topples into a river, and with nothing solid to transmute underwater he is finished off. During the clash he sneers that a man who can only destroy will never beat those with the power to create, a taunt Scar himself later throws back at Edward Elric.
