Sakura Kiyashiki

Sakura carries a wary edge in her looks. Her eyes are a deep blue, drawn to sharp points and framed by prominent lashes. She keeps her pink hair cropped short, falling only to the tops of her shoulders.

When Class 3-E first turns up, Sakura treats them as intruders, needling and pestering the group at every chance. That aggression traces back to her own experience of being picked on, a defense she throws up before anyone else can hurt her. Nagisa's steady patience eventually cracks the hostility, and once she learns to trust the class she opens up, growing especially attached to him.

Relentless bullying drove Sakura to quit attending her regular school, and she retreated into the neighborhood cram school run by an old man named Matsukata, where the other children kept their distance out of fear of her. That standoff met its first test when Class 3-E arrived to run the place after several of them injured Matsukata during an unsanctioned outing. Unimpressed by the newcomers, Sakura charged Nagisa with a broom to gauge his nerve, only to crash through rotted floorboards.

Nagisa still sat down to tutor her, and when she confided why she avoided school, he offered a metaphor about a cat stuck up a tree: the cram school is the ground that lends strength, the higher branches are the school that looks down on her, and only by learning to fear heights can she move through them freely. The idea stunned her, and she threw herself into two weeks of study under him, then returned to sit just the arithmetic exam before dashing home, a hit-and-run tactic that landed her second in her class with a score of ninety-five.

Sakura resurfaces now and then afterward, asking Nagisa to stay on as her private tutor and visiting the class's festival restaurant. During his final term she nudges him toward becoming a teacher, half-joking that she could always be his girlfriend if that fell through, and her faith becomes a deciding push in his choice to follow Korosensei's path. She later steadies herself through the entrance exam that lets her return to elementary school as a sixth grader, with Nagisa talking her down from her dread of facing bullies again.
