Russell Tringham

Russell looks to be around the middle of his teens, with fair skin and grey eyes set beneath blond hair. His usual outfit pairs a long-sleeved collared shirt worn with suspenders and a pair of dark trousers.

Russell projects a cocky, headstrong attitude, going so far as to challenge Edward to a fight, but the bravado reads as a front. Underneath, his sense of worth seems fastened to whether he can reproduce his father's research, and the story hints that he has harmed himself on at least one occasion. He can grow so consumed by his goal that he pushes his family aside, even though he cares for them deeply.

The Tringham brothers both specialize in alchemy centered on plants, and Russell carries on his father Nash's line of work. Chasing that research, he studies red water, a toxic liquid with alchemical properties, and while wielding a Philosopher's Stone derivative made from it he can trace transmutation circles without using his hands, a power he loses once the stone shatters.

To gain entry to sites and materials restricted to State Alchemists, he and Fletcher pose as Edward and Alphonse, with Russell pressing his reluctant brother into the scheme. The deception nearly gets them executed toward the end of the anime; after being spared, they try to aid Edward in his inquiry into the homunculi, and they are last glimpsed in the credits still pursuing their alchemical studies.
