Mikan comes across as a young teen, her brown hair falling all the way down her back above a pair of green eyes. Her signature outfit is a knee-length orange dress cinched by a wide green sash that knots into a bow behind her. Strapped orange shoes, a red choker, and a large red hair bow round out the look on her rare screen appearances.

Her celebrity is spelled out through the other characters more than through her own scenes. Umino reports that she has fronted eight commercials and pulls in two million yen a month, while Yumiko notes that a scout discovered her out in town. Her name plays on the same theme, since Mikan reads as tangerine and her family name means white bird.

During the first season Jadeite marks her as an energy source for the Dark Kingdom. As she showers at her apartment, the youma Derella ambushes her and assumes her form, then helps Jadeite stage the Cinderella Caravan, a talent contest promising ordinary people a shot at stardom. Derella beams the crowd into a trance so they all audition and passes every hopeful. The impostor then begins draining the performers at the real event, until Sailor Moon arrives and Derella drops the disguise. A short fight ends with the youma destroyed and everyone's energy returned, leaving the genuine Mikan to wake up dazed in her bathtub, where she had passed out mid-shower. She surfaces again for a single moment in the forty-eighth episode of Sailor Moon R, when Ail slips into her dressing room and steals her energy. She had been cast to lead a drama series, which was scrapped after the incident though it earned her a few mentions.
