Personality

Kokona is selfish and self-centered, brushing aside Meg Kataoka's own need to study while making her shoulder the guilt for an accident of Kokona's own making. She assumed a little swim practice would be enough to handle the open sea, and she thrives on being the center of attention. The title of her personal suggestion box, asking whether the world exists solely for her, sums up her ego neatly.

History

Kokona reconnects with Meg while Meg is practicing swimming in order to tutor her for the coming exams. Nagisa Shiota, Kaede Kayano, and Korosensei soon realize Kokona is blackmailing Meg, and questioning reveals the backstory: Meg had already taught her to swim, but Kokona, still a novice, nearly drowned trying to impress a crush in the sea and then wielded the incident against Meg. To break the cycle, the four hatch a plan to cure her fear of water. While she sleeps they carry her to the mountain lake, disguise themselves, and convince her she is dreaming as they coach her to swim against the current. The next day her swimming has improved so sharply that Meg observes Kokona no longer needs her help. Having conquered her terror, Kokona grows to love swimming and takes to the water three times a week. Her final appearance has her dropping by Class E's restaurant with Kaho Tsuchiya.
