Time to Kill Them with Kindness

Akira Takaoka informs Class 3-E that he is their new physical education instructor and that Tadaomi Karasuma will be confined to paperwork, urging the students to trust him as their father and treat themselves as family. He dazzles them with soccer footwork while Karasuma, watching alongside a snack-munching Korosensei, recalls the two of them serving together in the airborne forces and having heard that Takaoka outstripped him as an instructor. Filing back inside, the students weigh the two men: Ryunosuke Chiba asks Kurahashi her opinion, and she admits she prefers Karasuma, though Okajima concedes the stern agent is impossible to read next to the warm, approachable newcomer everyone seems eager to train under.

In the office, with Korosensei and Irina present, Takaoka boasts that Karasuma's three months of work would take only one in the army. Karasuma counters that these are junior high students, not professional soldiers, and that heavier training will wreck their studies, but Takaoka dismisses him as too relaxed with the planet at risk. Reaching into his sweater pocket, he presses Karasuma to show enthusiasm and produces a photo of himself beside four trainees, arguing that students respond to passion no matter how harsh the regimen. He vows to Korosensei that he will soon claim his head by forging first-rate assassins, tosses over more sweets, and departs. Korosensei brushes him off as naive, then tells Karasuma he alone should be the class's teacher before flying away.

Outside, Takaoka opens his first session by promising snacks afterward and leading a cheer, and the students play along even as Sugino mocks the dated chant. From the window Karasuma watches the newcomer win them over and begins to doubt his own guarded methods, wondering whether he ought to treat them like family too. Then he spots a second photograph, the reverse of the same trainees, and studying it closely he finds their backs covered in cuts and bruises while Takaoka smiles behind them. Horror sets in at once.

Takaoka hands out a new schedule alongside a total overhaul of the training program. The students are stunned by ten-period days packing seven straight training periods from noon to nine at night after only three hours of ordinary classes, plus extra Saturday sessions. He claims Chairman Gakuho Asano approved it on the grounds that the world is in crisis. Hiroto Maehara protests that their grades will collapse and that there is no room left for fun, insisting they cannot follow it. Takaoka instantly knees him in the chest, correcting 'we can't' to 'we will' and declaring, with a widening smile, that as father his commands are absolute.

Karasuma's agent explains that Takaoka, once outmatched by Karasuma as a peer, turned to teaching to compete and can churn out elite troops fast through a tightly bound, dictatorial family run by a violent father. Takaoka orders three sets of a hundred squats, warning that quitters will simply be replaced, and roams the field embracing students menacingly. He describes his creed as a nine-to-one blend of fear over affection, reasoning that soldiers beaten relentlessly grow pathetically grateful for a single kindness. When he asks Yukiko Kanzaki whether she will obey her father, she musters a smile and says she would rather have class with Karasuma, so he slaps her head hard enough to knock her down. As Nagisa, Kayano, and Sugino rush to help, Takaoka insists the only acceptable answer is yes, or else his fists.
