Summary

The forty-eighth chapter opens on the disaster Shiro engineered, with the class swept toward jagged rocks and Korosensei racing to pull each of them clear at enormous cost to his own body. Terasaka, frozen by the realization that he was fed a false plan, gets a brutal wake-up from Karma Akabane, who refuses to soothe him and lays the potential deaths at his feet. Much of the chapter turns inward, tracing Terasaka's history of coasting on intimidation until Korosensei robbed even Class E of its comfortable aimlessness. By the close he sheds his pride and asks Karma to devise a rescue.

Key Events

Shiro explains why the trap is so lethal: ferried at Mach 20, the students' bodies cannot survive a careless rescue, so Korosensei must slow down and take on water as he works, draining the protective mucus the pesticide was designed to exhaust. Once the last student, Taisei Yoshida, is safe, a tentacle coils around one of his own and Itona drags him under to begin their rematch, its remaining tentacles trimmed down for greater speed and force while the waterlogged teacher weakens.

Karma reaches the scene, instantly reads that Shiro and Itona exploited Terasaka, and punches him rather than accept his excuses, telling him to think instead of assign blame. Alone, Terasaka revisits his past: a loud, heavyset boy who ruled weaker peers by fear, who drifted into a private school expecting the same easy dominance, only to be humiliated by a studious classmate who predicted he would sink to Class E. He recognizes that even there, people with plans still steer him. Spurred by the sight of Sumire Hara stranded on a breaking branch, Terasaka finally swallows his ego, shoves his way to Karma, and demands a strategy, though Karma admits he has not actually thought one up yet.
