Summary
Surveying the destruction left behind by a Titan incursion that killed many, the soldiers Sorum Hume and Carlo Pikale notice movement in the body of a pregnant victim and recover a living infant from her. They take the child, Kuklo, to be the spawn of a Titan. Years later the near-feral boy is sold into servitude with the wealthy Inocencio family, where he grows close to Sharle, the household's daughter, and the two quietly plot an escape from her cruel brother Xavi. When the Titan Cult storms the Inocencio home, Xavi wrongly decides that Kuklo led the attackers there. After cutting the cultists down, he blinds Kuklo, only to end up incapacitated himself in the struggle.
