Ackerman clan

Long before the Walls rose, the Eldian Empire's experiments on the Subjects of Ymir produced an accidental warrior lineage designed to stand at the king's side. These soldiers, the Ackermans, acted as the monarchy's right hand and were trusted with the survival of their people until ideology tore the arrangement apart.

Zeke Yeager, who openly dreads facing them, describes the family as something out of legends once told only by the royal line. Kenny built a reputation as a feared killer, Levi is celebrated as the military's strongest fighter, and Mikasa graduated first in her trainee class.

When Karl Fritz withdrew to Paradis Island and rewrote the memories of everyone inside his new Walls, the Ackermans proved untouchable by that power, as did the Oriental clan and the future noble houses. Both persecuted families refused to embrace the king's vision of manufactured peace, and both paid dearly. Unable to control them, Fritz ordered a purge that dragged on for generations. The clan's head gave his own life to buy his kin's survival, and parents stopped telling children about the world before the Walls, hoping ignorance would shield the young from the crown's hunters.

Oppression followed the survivors anyway. Some hid in the Underground City while others scraped by in the mountains near Shiganshina, kept poor by interference in their business. The hunt ended only when King Uri Reiss, spared mid-assassination by Kenny Ackerman, apologized for the crimes of past monarchs and took Kenny on as his right-hand man.

In 844, robbers attacked a branch family living deep in the woods, murdering Mikasa's father and mother in a scheme to sell the women to buyers underground. Nine-year-old Eren Yeager, brought to the house by Dr. Grisha Yeager, tracked the kidnappers down, killed two of them, and urged the terrified Mikasa to fight. She drove a blade through the last man herself. Years later, an interrogation during the hunt for Eren and Historia reveals Kenny's surname to a stunned Levi and Mikasa.

Certain Ackermans awaken a battle sense that Levi describes as understanding precisely what must be done in the moment. The trait grants physical performance no normal human can match. Zeke traces it to imperial-era Titan research: the clan channels the Power of the Titans while staying human, never transforming and never inheriting one of the Nine. An awakened member also draws on the accumulated fighting experience of every Ackerman before them through the paths.

The gift sleeps until mortal danger triggers it. Mikasa's erupted during her kidnapping, letting her crush a knife handle bare-handed and splinter floorboards with one foot. Levi's surfaced when five traffickers nearly beat him to death; he butchered all of them. Kenny reportedly awakened in a similar crisis.

Eren later claims an awakened Ackerman must serve a host, obeying orders when facing death and suffering headaches whenever their buried self resists. This is a lie. Zeke knows nothing about any host mechanism or the source of Mikasa's headaches, Armin correctly deduces the deception, and Zeke believes Mikasa guards Eren out of love rather than instinct, a view Hajime Isayama has echoed about all three clan members. Ackermans also cannot become Pure Titans and shrug off the Founding Titan's memory manipulation, though they can still appear within the paths. The awakened power disappears alongside the Power of the Titans after Eren's death.
