Azumabito family

The family crest, three samurai swords forming a triangle inside a circle, honors its shogunate roots; members sew it onto their clothing and even tattoo it on their skin, which is how Mikasa carries proof of her lineage on her wrist. In-world stereotype paints the Azumabito as schemers who can smell money, and Kiyomi has been seen drooling at the thought of vast wealth, though she insists the clan's pride survived the eras that earned it such a reputation. The name itself means "east man" in Old Japanese.

Hizuru and the Eldian Empire were allies before the Great Titan War, and a son of the Shogun clan grew close to the Fritz family. When Karl Fritz moved his capital to Paradis Island, that son accepted an invitation to stay, founding the branch known inside the Walls as the Asian clan. Not being Subjects of Ymir, they were untouched by the king's memory wipe; having sided with the Ackermans against the crown and refused ennoblement, they were cast out and hunted. By 844 the island bloodline had nearly been wiped out, and the killing of Mikasa's mother by traffickers, who intended to sell mother and daughter in Mitras, left Mikasa the last known carrier of the line within the Walls.

Generations of separation end when Zeke Yeager approaches Kiyomi Azumabito between 850 and 852, offering vertical maneuvering equipment and exclusive access to the iceburst stone found only on Paradis, resources that could restore Hizuru's standing among nations. Kiyomi visits the island in 852 as a special envoy, recognizes Mikasa as kin through the wrist tattoo, and lays out a plan for Paradis to catch up with the modern world. By 853, however, the family declines to broker the island's trade, preferring to keep its resources to itself.

Kiyomi Azumabito serves as Hizuru's ambassador. In Liberio she shields the Warrior candidate Udo from punishment by claiming she spilled the wine herself, and she pays respects to Willy Tybur backstage before his fatal declaration. Returning to Paradis to observe the Rumbling test after Zackly's assassination, she admits to Mikasa that the family's massive investments and debts matter more to her than who rules the island, while insisting her concern for Mikasa is genuine. When the Yeagerists seize the harbor, her engineers sprint through gunfire and Thunder Spears to reach the boat for Odiha, protected by the bodies of the Female and Armored Titans, and later help Onyankopon ready the flying boat. Mikasa Ackerman, the island branch's last descendant, and her late mother round out the family's known members.
